Industry outreach

Every year billions of crabs, lobsters, prawns, nephrops and crayfish are captured or bred for food, and transported around the world by sea, air and land for commercial purposes. At every stage of their sea-to-plate journey - capture, transport, storage and slaughter - decapod crustaceans face many stressors and welfare threats.

These fragile animals pass through the hands of many workers, in the fishing, wholesale, processing, retail, restaurants and food service, transport and export sectors. Now that decapods are recognised in law as sentient animals who can feel pain, there are significant implications for each of these sectors – all of whom have a moral and legal responsibility to protect the welfare of decapods in their supply chain.

At Crustacean Compassion, we do not campaign against the use of decapod crustaceans as food. We welcome good practice in the food industry and believe that all sentient animals deserve humane treatment, determined by the needs of their species. To achieve this, we work proactively with the seafood industry to improve welfare practices throughout the journey from sea-to-plate.

Seafood companies have a huge opportunity to boost consumer demand for their products, increase business productivity and improve public perception of the industry by taking meaningful action on decapod welfare. By persuading and supporting companies to sell higher welfare products across their shellfish ranges, we help unlock the numerous benefits of good welfare standards for decapods, businesses and consumers alike.
